I’m gonna guess that most people who read my blog understand the concept of periodization, or at the very least, they’ve heard of it. Basically, the idea is, you can only be at 100% fitness for a short period of time so it’s best to structure training so that you can time that 100% fitness with the biggest events. That’s what I am going to write about today, kind of.

As of this writing, I have meditated for 193 days in a row. For 193 days, I have sat down on couches, planes, in cars, on floors, and hotel rooms. Each of those days, I have fired up the Headspace app on my phone and then taken some time to focus on my breath and be in the present moment (And yes, I do see the irony of using a smart phone, something that takes my attention away from the present more than any other distraction in my life, as a vehicle for practicing mindfulness. Please stay tuned for further irony).

Most people seem to accept that we are not defined by our failures, even if they struggle to internalize it. We identify with the implicit premise that there is an essence to humanity that transcends extrinsic outcomes, particularly when the outcome is negative. This just feels right to us because losing or failing at something sucks old car tires and that’s not a feeling that people want tied to their being. So, it’s easy to feel that feeling and say, “That’s not me. That is just this situation, I am bigger than this shitty feeling.” However, if you believe that, which I think most people do, then that means that we are also not defined by our successes
